Psychologist for Victims of Gender-Based Violence in Málaga

Psychological assessment and care, counselling and referral to other professionals and institutions depending on the case. Psychological intervention for women and the minors in their care.

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?

Gender-based violence is a serious violation of Human Rights

What can be done to preserve the rights of women and girls? In general terms, it depends on each person as an individual, on society, education, public and private institutions, the family and the media. Educating in equality, respect, the acquisition and practice of values such as tolerance and freedom, and promoting healthy relationships and positive models of masculinity.

Do you think you are, or do you know you are, a victim of gender-based violence? I encourage you to come and tell me. I’m sure we can do something together.

I have extensive experience in caring for cases of gender-based violence. My time as head of the Women’s Institute in Málaga has helped me complete extensive training in this field.

Women arrive in a state of emotional vulnerability, with different symptoms caused by the exposure to violence they have suffered in their romantic relationships.

I carry out psychological assessment and care, as well as individualised counselling, as each case comes with its own particular circumstances.

Counselling and Support

I have extensive experience in caring for cases of gender-based violence. My time as head of the Women’s Institute in Málaga has helped me complete extensive training in this field. Working with victims of male violence

There is another way out, working towards recovery

The psychological intervention process is explained in detail.

Among other issues, work is carried out on matters related to the cycle of violence, indicators of different types of violence — economic, sexual, psychological, physical, controlling, vicarious — codependency, healthy and toxic relationships, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder — PTSD — depression, anxiety, self-esteem, social aspects, leisure and free time, motherhood skills and competencies, how to explain what has happened to minors in their care, and how to start a new life from freedom and without fear.

Depending on the case, I refer women to other professionals and institutions, and we work together because the most important thing is for the woman to fly again with strong and free wings.

Gender-Based Violence 1 - Marienna Santiago Toro

Foreign women victims of gender-based violence

I speak English and create an individualised plan according to each woman’s needs, using a multicultural approach.

Gender-Based Violence 2 - Marienna Santiago Toro

Women victims with minors in their care

I work with these women and, through them, with the minors, so that they know how to address and manage with their sons and daughters the difficulties they are going through, and how to detect symptoms in minors that may be warning signs that they are not well. The aim is for them to become empowered and active women and mothers again.

Healing wounds, learning what a healthy and toxic relationship is, and ensuring that experiences at an early age remain in the past, using them as momentum towards the future and towards new, healthier forms of relationships.

THE PROCESS

How I Work

It depends on the severity of the case and the symptoms, but it is recommended that, for approximately the first six weeks, appointments be weekly and then fortnightly. However, this will depend on each case, the symptoms and the associated risks.

FIRST ASSESSMENT

Therapeutic goals are established together with the patient, making her the protagonist of her own recovery story.

INTERVENTION

During the therapeutic process, the emotional consequences of the violence suffered are addressed, such as fear, anxiety, loss of self-esteem or emotional dependence. The aim is to understand what has been experienced, strengthen personal resources and recover safety and autonomy.

FOLLOW-UP

Throughout the process, follow-up is carried out to consolidate progress and prevent relapses. The woman is supported in rebuilding her personal, emotional and social life, reinforcing her autonomy and her ability to establish healthy relationships.

ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

There are many fears among women who have suffered male violence. There is no single profile. In my experience, I have met women of all ages, all professions and different socio-educational and economic backgrounds. This happens, and there are many issues and variables involved in these situations.

Hello. First of all, speak to a professional, whether in public or private institutions. Do not isolate yourself; find out about the different options available.

If you are determined to leave that relationship, seek professional support from a mental health professional. Fears, blocks and insecurities are very normal, but they need to be worked on because these emotions prevent us from seeing clearly.

Each woman’s symptoms are different depending on various factors: age, resilience, personal skills, economic and professional independence. The years of the relationship with the aggressor, the length of exposure and the type of violence suffered — physical, emotional or psychological, sexual, economic — are also taken into account.

Symptoms generally vary, but as professionals we often encounter Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder — PTSD — depression, anxiety, sleep problems, self-esteem issues and isolation, among others.

Yes, you can recover: your life, your freedom, your joy, new projects and hopes. Living without fear is priceless.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

There are many types, levels and signs of violence. Privacy is a right that no one can violate. If, in addition to this, it is imposed and involves blackmail, these are indicators of violence because there is control, domination and emotional manipulation, and it is most likely that over time it will escalate.

A relationship should be based, among other things, on freedom and respect. With these indicators, those values are not present.
